Welcome to the 'home' of Katie W Stewart. Who am I?
As one of six, I was blessed with a childhood full of fun, where imagination and creativity were encouraged. The field at the back of the house was not a field, but a new world promising adventure. Each hillock, ditch and pond had a name. When it was too wet or cold to be adventuring, shelves full of books at home offered trips to completely new places. If I wasn’t reading, I was drawing, everything from animals (another of my loves) to fantasy worlds. When we came to Australia when I was nine years old, my outside real world changed a lot, but home was still the same. If truth be told, I don’t think I ever really grew up. I still imagine new worlds in the midst of mundane reality. I people them with characters I’ve known, met, seen or conjured from a mixture of memories and make life difficult for them so that I can save them. I also illustrate other people’s books or make covers for them. If I’m not creating, I’m miserable. You really don’t want to know me when I’m miserable. When I can bring myself back to reality, I live in rural Western Australia, with my farmer husband, three children and a menagerie of pets, in a house full of dust and mayhem. I work in a school library, sorting and shelving books all day and dreaming of the time when I can slip one of my own in the place for books marked STE. In the meantime, I write to get the stories out of my head in the hope that other people might enjoy my worlds, too.
